It is a fact that football is the most loved and followed sport in Turkey. If we make a ranking about it, who knows what rank women's volleyball will come out in. But if we make a successful ranking, the international success of women's volleyball, which is the most successful branch of Turkish sports, cannot be denied. Let's take a closer look at the "Sultans of the Net" that has been consistently successful over the years.
Our Turkish women's national volleyball team won the title of "Sultans of the Net" in 2003 during the European Championship. It was given by the TRT Announcers describing the matches that year, after the legendary performance of the team in the matches. Since that day, every player who has played in the women's national volleyball team became a sultan for us.
The 2003 European Championship was instrumental in not only becoming the Sultans of the Net but also attracting the attention of the whole world with their success. The success of the Sultans of the Net, who finished second in the championship with a very good performance, continued without stopping. The Sultans also managed to be in 7th place in the Women's Volleyball World Cup organized by the FIVB in the same year.
The championship in which the Sultans of the Net participate the most is the European Women's Volleyball Championship. Considered as one of the best teams in Europe, our national team has managed to make us proud by being second twice, although they have not been first in this championship so far. The second time they became silver medallists was in 2019. Unfortunately, they lost first place in the championship, which was hosted by Turkey, by losing to Serbia in the final.
Sultans of the Net won second place in the European Women's Volleyball Championship, as well as third place twice. By beating Italy 3-2 in 2011, our women's national volleyball team won the bronze medal in 2017.
Along with the European Women's Volleyball Championship, our national team also engraved its name in the history of the European Volleyball League with golden letters. Having won first place in 2014, the Sultans had the pride of being in the top three for three consecutive years by being second in 2009, third in 2010 and, second in 2011. In 2015, they finished the European Volleyball League in second place.
Known as one of the best women's volleyball teams in the world, the medals won by the Sultans of the Net are not limited to those in Europe. In 2012, they participated in the Olympics held in London and took ninth place.
The World Grand Prix championships organized by the FIVB are among the championships in which the Sultans of the Net successfully represent our country and make us proud every time. Even though our national team, which participated in this championship for the first time in 2008, took seventh place, when they participated for the second time in 2012, they won the bronze medal after legendary matches. Apart from third place, which is the best place they have achieved in this championship, the Sultans of the Net took fourth place in 2014.
The Mediterranean Games, attended by the countries bordering the Mediterranean, is one of the championships in which the Sultans of the Net represent us. In the games held every four years since 1975, our women's national volleyball team managed to enter the top three almost every time. Having three bronze and six silver medals, the Sultans crowned their success in this championship with first place in 2005.
